Pavilion For All - Brent Cross Town
Nestled in a circular wildflower meadow with silver birch saplings growing over the years into an elegant copse of light dappled trees., the Pavilion is sited close to Claremont Road on the western edge of the Clitterhouse Playing Fields.
Five pavilions are gathered under a singular roof protecting an open courtyard. New pathways across Clitterhouse Fields converge on the buildings, encouraging walkers to pass through the courtyard or around the edge of the copse. The courtyard will provide protection from the wind and will be animated by diverse groups of people, with sports people crossing the courtyard on their way to practice, joggers and dog walkers on their way across the fields, parents waiting on children, and local residents meeting friends. The Courtyard could be used for events and can be easily closed off when the building is not in use by sliding timber gates between the pavilion blocks.
The site is visible from all entrances but is close to the road to provide passive surveillance from passing traffic on Claremont Road and from nearby housing.
Over time the copse will provide presence for the pavilion and give protection from winds sweeping over Clitterhouse Fields, helping avoid heat-loss from the pavilions and making the building a more pleasant place to spend time. The Silver Birch trees are light and quick to grow, developing from saplings to 4-6 metres in height over 10 years, and eventually rising to 9-12 metres over 15-20 years.
Until the copse is mature the buildings will be surrounded by a wildflower meadow, defined at the edge by a circular pathway. The trees and flowers will encourage biodiversity, and the buildings will be constructed from natural materials including Cross-Laminated Timber and a rammed earth base.
